Technology has eliminated almost all of the problems that plagued tile showers in the past. Waterproof and even waterproof backing surfaces have replaced the old "waterproof" drywall backing and completely eliminated leaks. The new polyurethanes and epoxies are very resistant to contamination, making the drudgery of scrubbing grout a thing of the past. Of course, not every tile is suitable for the damp environment of the bathroom.
